USB Pen Drives are commonly used storage devices. Roughly the size of a cigarette lighter, these little drives, can easily fit into pockets and purses. They use flash memory for storing data, and communicate with other devices using the USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard. Hence they are also referred to as USB flash drives. They can be plugged into any other device, like PC, laptop, PlayStation etc. which has a USB female port, for transferring data.

A typical USB drive consists of a printed circuit board, with all the circuitry and a USB interface. Presently, USB 2.0 is the most widely used version. The PCB portion is enclosed in either a plastic or rubberised case. The USB connector usually has a small cap to cover it. Certain pen drives also have retractable USB connectors.

USB drives have completely ousted floppy drives from a desktop PC. They are more reliable, more easily portable, more rugged, offer higher capacities of data storage and higher speeds of data transfers than floppy discs. A USB drive does not have mechanical moving parts. However, when plugged into a laptop or PC, it is considered equivalent to any other storage drive, by the laptop/PC. Hence it is included in the 'drive' family. USB drives are compatible with almost all operating systems that exist today. They are rewritable too, with almost 1 million write and remove cycles. Plus, they can retain data stored in them for about 10 years.

There are different kinds of USB pen drives available today. They offer different storage capacities – 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB etc. There is also USB memory of 256GB in the market these days.

Companies like Samsung, Toshiba, ScanDisk, LG, HP, Acer, Philips, Sony, Transcend and Viking are into USB drive making. To pep-up things many of these manufacturers also design USB flash drives with fancy covers. You'll find thumbs, teddies, pacmans, cars, Santa, Xmas trees, penguins, tools, gorillas, dinosaurs, surgeons, burgers, aliens... you name it !!!
