Ethernet versus USB

Ethernet and USB are the two network connections used by the majority of broadband modems. Although both USB and Ethernet offer the same functions and each works in almost every situation, they cannot be connected concurrently. On the other hand, users can re-configure their modem between USB and Ethernet at any time. The question which remains is which one is the better interface.

Ethernet a better option

Ethernet is better than USB and reliable as well. When you use Ethernet, connection will drop less often and you can experience faster response time to your modem. When cables are considered, Ethernet cables are longer than USB cables. USB cables have a limited length of approximately 5m, whereas the Ethernet cables are can run up to 100meter, thereby ensuring better use.

Installing device driver software is not required in Ethernet, whereas, it is necessary in USB interface. New operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP is competent of installing drives for most broadband modems automatically. It is not necessary that all operating systems need be compatible with the specified brand of modem.

The procedure differs with varied operating systems. In the case of USB drivers, overall performance of the old computers will be slowed down. The device driver, which is one among the added installation steps, is the cause of likely problems that are unlikely to happen in the case of Ethernet.

When compared to USB, Ethernet provides better networking, offering high performance. Though this advantage is noticed by everyone, the performance is given less consideration when selecting between USB and Ethernet connections.

Adequate bandwidth for broadband modem is provided by both Ethernet and USB 2.0 interfaces. Modem speed is in relation with the speed of the modem’s connection to your service provider.

Hardware cost of USB is less than Ethernet interface. Ethernet network adaptor needs to be procured and installed, if it is not available in a broadband modem that is connected to a computer. However, other advantages overshadow these factors and make Ethernet a better preferred interface.
